The benefits of N-acetylcysteine

If you care about health and wellness, you’re probably familiar with how certain ingredients can become a  bit of a “flavor of the month”; they get a lot of hype, they make some incredible claims, they end up in everything, and then bit by bit the reality catches up with the hype and people realize that yeah, acai berries are good for you...but they’re not magical. This very often tends to be the case with new ingredients. Sadly, this sometimes means that truly incredible ingredients that we’ve known about for a long time end up overlooked.

Such is the case with n-acetylcysteine. While it has a bit of a scary name, n-acetylcysteine (or, NAC) has a long recognized history of health benefits. First discovered in the 1960s, NAC is considered a “must” in almost all medical settings; in fact, the World Health Organization even lists it on their “List of Essential Medicines”, a list of the safest and most effective medications on the planet. NAC’s original claim to fame is that it is one of the only substances on the planet capable of saving someone, and their liver, following an acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose.

NAC’s liver protecting effects extend beyond Tylenol. Studies have shown that taking NAC when consuming alcohol helps reduce oxidative stress on the liver; in fact, NAC has been shown to help protect multiple parts of your body when drinking, with other clinical studies showing protective effects from NAC on the heart and brain as well. At least part of how NAC appears to achieve these benefits is through  its antioxidative properties, as NAC is a direct precursor to glutathione, one of the body’s most important antioxidants.

Interestingly, NAC appears to potentially have even more benefits, although the research is still actively ongoing. Some studies have shown that NAC appears to help reduce habit forming and addictive behavior, with NAC  appearing effective in helping treat addictions ranging from smoking, to cocaine, and heroin abuse. While research is still ongoing, it appears NAC may even help treat alcohol use disorder and alcohol habit formation!

Overall, NAC is one of the most safest and most effective health ingredients in the world today, particularly for supporting your liver health, which is why Toast! uses it as one of our primary ingredients. We made Toast! gummies shareable so you can easily carry them in your bag or pocket and then be the talk of the group for bringing party favors!  Check out our collection here and stock up today.
